Video: Winsor & Newton Galeria Mediums

Winsor & Newton Galeria is a collection of mediums designed to enhance the creations of artists working with acrylic paint, such as Winsor & Newton’s Galeria Acrylic Colour range. Providing a unique, removable glossy layer, Winsor & Newton’s Galeria Gloss Varnish offers the ultimate protection for acrylic artwork.

What is a Varnish?

Traditionally a combination of drying oil, resin, and a thinner or solvent, Varnish is a transparent liquid which dries to form a hard, protective film.

Why use a Varnish?

In addition to preserving artwork, and offering protection against dirt and dust, a varnish evens out the final appearance of the paint, ensuring a uniform finish.

Why choose Winsor & Newton Galeria Gloss Varnish?

Due to its highly reflective properties, Galeria Gloss Varnish gives Acrylic Colour the brightest and deepest intensity. The final finish may be altered to varying degrees by mixing with Galeria Matt Varnish.

How do I use a Varnish?

Allow the painting to dry for at least 24 hours before applying a thin coat of varnish. For optimum results, it is recommended that two coats of varnish are applied, leaving 24 hours drying time between coats. Do not use Galeria Gloss Varnish as a medium.

Further information and tips are provided in Winsor & Newton’s guide: All You Need To Know About Varnishing Paintings.

Who are Winsor & Newton?

In 1832, William Winsor and Henry Newton introduced the first moist water colours to the world. Today, Winsor and Newton remain the premier choice for artists, offering a wide variety of fine art supplies including: oil, water colour, acrylic and alkyd paints, pastels, artists' brushes, canvases, papers and portfolios.
